In trying to make Michael feel strongly about her – an endeavour into which she put months of work (work which involved planning of the utmost subtlety: the clandestine investigation of his daily route to and from the workplace, the calculation of his sleep patterns based on how often she could observe the light in his bedroom going on and off during the course of an average night, and the furtive copying of the spare key which sat under a stone beside his front door) – Martina only succeeded in having a highly prohibitive court order passed against her; the message was clear: he was playing hard to get.
